The MANGA Research Institute (a general incorporated association; Representative Director: Ken Kikuchi) has organized the borderless manga and anime conference \u201cInternational Manga & Anime Festival Reiwa Toshima\u201d since its inaugural event held in November 2019 in Toshima City, which was designated as an East Asian Cultural City 2019. The conference has been held through its 5th edition in 2024, receiving strong acclaim.<\/p>\n

Starting with the 6th edition, the event has been renamed \u201cInternational MANGA Conference Reiwa Toshima\u201d and will be held as IMART 2025 on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. The conference will feature a combination of live-streamed and pre-recorded talk sessions from Animate Theater (B2F, Animate Ikebukuro Main Store).<\/p>\n

IMART 2025 is scheduled to host more than 20 sessions.<\/p>\n

In addition, an international business matchmaking event, the 3rd Global Business Matching, bringing together entertainment companies from overseas, is planned for March 2026.<\/p>\n

\u25c6 What Is IMART, the Borderless Manga & Anime Conference<\/p>\n

The International Manga & Anime Festival Reiwa Toshima (IMART) was launched in November 2019 as Japan\u2019s first borderless conference dedicated to \u201cshaping the future of manga and anime.\u201d Following its inaugural edition, IMART has continued to be held regularly, with the 2nd edition in February 2021, the 3rd in October 2022, the 4th in November 2023, and the 5th in November 2024.<\/p>\n

Positioned as a cross-industry conference spanning both the manga and anime sectors, IMART brings together innovators and practitioners from across the industries through keynote speeches, talk sessions, and networking events, with the aim of sharing expertise and insights. As opportunities for cross-sector interaction remain limited in everyday practice, the role of a borderless conference that fosters horizontal connections has become increasingly important for Japan\u2019s manga and anime industries. In response, the 6th edition, IMART 2025, will be held.<\/p>\n

From the 6th edition onward, in line with the official renaming of the event, the conference theme will be updated to \u201cManga IP.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u25c6 Establishment of the MANGA Research Institute (General Incorporated Association)<\/p>\n

To date, IMART has been organized under different frameworks: the 1st edition in 2019 was hosted by Toshima City, while the 2nd edition in 2021 through the 4th edition last year were produced by the voluntary organization IMART Executive Committee.
In preparation for IMART 2024, the operating body MANGA Research Institute (a general incorporated association; hereafter \u201cMANGA Institute\u201d) was established in March 2024, and responsibility for the future management and operation of IMART has been transferred to the MANGA Institute.<\/p>\n

Going forward, IMART\u2014which has primarily been conducted as an online event\u2014will gradually transition into a hybrid format that enables on-site participation. At the same time, the Institute will pilot a range of new initiatives, including international business matchmaking programs and co-located side events, such as the anime industry recruitment fair \u201cWakuWork 2026 Autumn.\u201d These efforts are designed to create a more accessible framework for participation by overseas publishers and platform operators.<\/p>\n

In addition, the MANGA Institute will continue the IP market research initiative launched in 2024, and plans to carry out cross-sector research spanning the manga and anime industries.<\/p>\n

Born in 1979. Completed the Graduate School of Innovation Management at Hosei University, earning an MBA in Accounting.
In 2009, he co-founded \u201cManga Night,\u201d a unit dedicated to creating communication through manga. In 2020, he established the Manga Night Association (general incorporated association), where he has led initiatives to promote \u201clearning through manga,\u201d operated physical hubs (with grants from the Nippon Foundation), and developed exhibition projects.<\/p>\n

He currently serves as Managing Partner of Rainbow Bird LLC, a planning company specializing in manga-related projects; Representative Director of the Takao Saito Gekiga Cultural Foundation; Part-time Lecturer in the Department of Manga, Faculty of Arts, Tokyo Polytechnic University; and Auditor of the Japan Society for Studies in Manga, among other roles.<\/p>\n

Born in 1983. He joined Recruit Co., Ltd. as a new graduate, working in advertising sales for the Hot Pepper division. After completing his contract, he spent approximately two and a half years outside the workforce before joining Tokyo Otaku Mode, where he helped launch its cross-border e-commerce division. After working independently as a freelancer from 2015, he founded WakuWork Inc. in May 2016.<\/p>\n

He currently organizes \u201cWakuWork,\u201d a job fair specializing in the anime industry, and plans and operates programs for young people aspiring to work in the field, including anime industry career seminars and anime industry writing workshops.
